Overview
FreeCAD builds dimensioned objects from sketches and modeling history. It is relevant to product and mechanical modeling, including work often done in proprietary CAD tools. It is not a blanket replacement for all AutoCAD drafting, industry add-ons or required DWG workflows.
What it is for
- Build parameter-driven solid models.
- Create technical drawings from 3D models.
What to check first
- Verify tolerances, dimensions and geometry in the receiving CAD application.
- Test DWG-related requirements and workbench dependencies separately.
A useful first test
Model a simple part, change an early dimension and inspect the rebuilt geometry and exported exchange file.
Cost and hosting
Free, open-source software.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.

Parametric parts & technical drawings
FreeCAD is relevant to parametric 3D tasks, not every AutoCAD drafting workflow.
Our take Consider FreeCAD for dimensioned 3D parts and derived drawings. Validate required DWG exchange independently.
